Out-of-body experiences, chi and related psi phenomena may seem like esoteric subjects detached from our day-to-day personal concerns and world affairs. In this discussion, we will reflect on how it is possible to study these phenomena in a very practical, personal and direct way, as well as through formal scientific research. Both approaches can help people have visceral experiences that tend to lead to a better understanding of the evolving, non-material nature of Being and the interconnection between all living beings. This paradigm shift arguably addresses the systemic root causes of many of the social, economic, geo-political, and environmental crises Humanity faces today.
When we expand our consciousness, we can renew the values, behaviors and attitudes that underlie our personal and collective struggles and unlock our well-being, empathy, creativity and potential. The out-of-body experience may be to consciousness science what the telescope was to astronomy: a way to radically challenge our understanding of our place in the universe. Even for those who are not open to consciousness beyond the brain and an afterlife, the OBE and related altered, psi or mindfulness states may help mitigate pain, anxiety, stress and related illnesses. It may also help everyday people tap into new, big ideas that can drive social justice, science and economic development in the 21st century.
